Use This Guide to Keep Your Glass Shower Door Clean and Spotless

Jun 3, 2022

Glass has become a popular option for homeowners who want to have sturdy and elegant shower doors that can last for a long time. However, just because glass is a durable material doesn’t mean that it can stay in good condition without proper care! If you want your shower glass door to last for many years and avoid getting damaged, you need to know how to clean it properly and preserve its beauty and structural integrity.

Not sure where or how to start? Don’t worry since you’ll find all the glass cleaning tips that you’ll need in our comprehensive guide!

Creating the Ideal Shower Door Cleaning Schedule

Many people tend to clean their glass shower door only when it’s thoroughly streaked with soap scum and water stains and has become too grimy and cloudy to look out from. However, this is actually a bad idea because 1) you’ll end up showering most of the time with a dirty glass door and 2) your shower door can develop permanent stains that can be difficult to remove.

To ensure that your bathroom is always pristine and that your glass shower door will stay crystal-clear, you need to create (and stick to!) the ideal cleaning schedule. This starts with cleaning the glass surfaces after each shower using a squeegee and keeping the door open to facilitate good ventilation. You’ll also have to clean your glass shower door at least once a week using a sponge (a foam cleaning pad could also work) as well as vinegar or any other cleaning agent.

Of course, you will need to give your shower door a deep clean at least once a month. This usually involves scrubbing not just the glass surface but also all nooks and crannies and spraying a water-repellent product on the door to prevent hard water stains from forming.

DIY vs Store-Bought Glass Cleaning Products

You can find a large selection of glass cleaning products in your local hardware store or even in online shops, so you only have to choose the product that fits your budget and suits your preferences. However, you can also opt to use vinegar as your cleaning agent! Vinegar can cut through mineral buildup and soap scum and restore the crystal-clear qualities of your shower glass door. Simply mix vinegar with distilled water and dish soap to create your own DIY cleaning product. Just take note that vinegar is strong enough to etch through stone, so you shouldn’t use it if your bathroom walls and/or floors are made of natural stone.

What You Should Never Use on Your Glass Shower Door

Stay away from ammonia-based cleaning products, which can weaken glass surfaces and destroy their structural integrity. You should also avoid using tap water since it contains hard minerals that can be abrasive on glass and leave behind unsightly spots and smears. Instead, use distilled water when cleaning your glass shower door. It’s likewise advisable to use soft microfiber cloths when wiping your shower door instead of paper towels, which are too rough and can scratch the glass.
